Greenbrier Confirms Pelicans' Training Camp Move, New Facility Could Be Ready By '16

The Greenbrier Owner Jim Justice has confirmed that the Pelicans will "follow the path" of the Saints and travel to the West Virginia resort for training camp, according to Cam Huffman of the Beckley REGISTER-HERALD. The "original plan was to hold practices at Greenbrier East High School, where Justice coaches both the girls and boys basketball teams," but Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry was "concerned about the stage that is close to the basket on one end of the floor." Additionally, the Pelicans "wanted to have two NBA courts to use for practice." So Justice "came up with the idea of getting two floors to put inside The Greenbrier’s indoor tennis facility." There is also a "longterm plan in the works to build a building around the turf practice field at the Saints facility, which could be used to house the basketball floors and become a multi-purpose facility that could host a variety of activities." Justice said that construction would "also benefit the Saints, giving them a place to practice in the event of bad weather." But he said that September of '16, or even '17, would "probably be the earliest that project could be completed." Huffman noted the Pelicans will "hold 8-10 practices, with at least half being open to the public." The Greenbrier will "set up" bleachers and stands to "give fans an opportunity to watch" (Beckley REGISTER-HERALD, 8/16).
