Golf Analyst Peter Oosterhuis Fighting Alzheimer's, Teams With Nantz For Awareness

Former CBS golf analyst Peter Oosterhuis, who left the net after last season, has been suffering from early-onset Alzheimer's since last July, according to Jaime Diaz of GOLF WORLD. The 67-year-old had been "aware of some memory loss that was affecting his commentary on CBS and Golf Channel." With his contract expiring last November, he "informed his agent, Sandy Montag, and CBS colleague and friend Jim Nantz of his disease." Oosterhuis in January announced his decision to leave to "focus on things in life that I have always wanted to do." Diaz notes Oosterhuis is "revealing his story publicly because he wants to do what he can to help Alzheimer's treatment and research," which means "joining the major fundraising efforts of Nantz," whose father Jim Jr. had the disease for 13 years before passing away in '08. Since December, Oosterhuis "has been treated by specialists" at the Nantz National Alzheimer's Center at Houston Methodist Neurological Center. He has been "in a program for an experimental drug in its third trial that is designed to break down the formations of plaque in the brain that cause Alzheimer's." Oosterhuis is "trying to stay active," and besides helping Nantz, he is "doing a Saturday-morning radio show on Sirius XM with co-host Fred Albers" (GOLF WORLD, 6/29 issue).
