Golfers Continue Praise For Travelers Championship, Which Again Draws Big Crowds

PGA Tour Travelers Championship Tournament Dir Nathan Grube estimated that this weekend's event drew the "largest crowd" since Travelers became title sponsor in '07, according to Paul Doyle of the HARTFORD COURANT. Grube said that it was "safe to say the tournament drew in excess of 200,000" spectators. Travelers Exec VP & Chief Administrative Officer Andy Bessette said, "(My) metrics say that we're probably over 200,000 people again for the week. We usually estimate that we've had about 225,000 people per week. ... I know we're going to be well in excess of 200,000, and I think that is a safe assessment." Bessette added, "I think it has been a terrific (week). The playing field was probably one of our best ever. When you look at the leaderboard between Bubba Watson and Paul Casey and Brandt Snedeker and all the rest of the guys in there, to have that kind of a competition on Sunday is what we pray for every year" (HARTFORD COURANT, 6/29).

GOING THE EXTRA MILE: In Boston, Michael Whitmer noted Casey "experienced something new" at this week's tourney. Casey: "They gave me a little card in there that said you get a free dinner at (certain area) restaurants. Everything about this week so far has just been awesome." He added, "They can’t seem to do enough for you here, which when you’ve got 40-odd events, or you’re playing two tours and you’ve got a lot of events to choose from, what makes the difference, and why do I want to go play this place versus that place?” Whitmer noted the Travelers "must entice players with an appealing course at TPC River Highlands, perks, and amenities, especially since it’s held the week after the US Open, when many players might want to decompress and take some time off." Bessette: "We’ve been very strategic about everything. We send onesies when they have babies, we send congratulatory gifts at the end of the year, once the final (FedEx Cup) rankings are known; we’ve done GoPros, we’ve done Beats by Dr. Dre, we’ve done iPods." Golfer Aaron Baddeley said, "It's the little things that they do. They just take care of you. It's always on my schedule." Whitmer noted Bessette and Grube are "working tirelessly" for the tournament, as they "attend up to five PGA Tour events each year before the Travelers, making their pitch" (BOSTON GLOBE, 6/27).
