St. Louis Leading Country In Local Ratings For U.S. Games At FIFA Women's World Cup

St. Louis sports fans have been "the most ardent" followers of the U.S. women's national soccer team in the ongoing FIFA Women's World Cup, according to Dan Caesar of the ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH. The USWNT has played four games thus far and those contests have averaged a 4.9 local rating in St. Louis on Fox/FS1, "the No. 1 rating among the 56 major U.S. markets." DC is second at a 4.6 local rating. St. Louis "has been No. 1 for the three most recent telecasts after being No. 3 for the first match." While St. Louis "has been drawing stellar ratings for the women compared to other markets, the audience is much smaller than it was for the men last year." In last year's men’s World Cup, St. Louis "clunked in 33rd" for four U.S. matches. St. Louis did not rank better than 23rd for any match (ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH, 6/26). Meanwhile, on Long Island, Neil Best profiles Fox Sports WWC co-lead analyst and former USWNT coach Tony DiCicco, who "has been anything but a homer in his most visible television role to date." He "has offered sharp commentary, often disagreeing not only with his co-analyst, Cat Whitehill, but more notably with United States coach Jill Ellis' strategic approach." He "has been far from the only one to take issue with Ellis, but no one has a more visible platform from which to do so" (NEWSDAY, 6/26).
