Fox Sports Finalizing Construction Efforts On Temporary World Cup HQ In Vancouver

A two-story, stone-and-wood, sloped-roof structure "rapidly taking shape at the north end of Jack Poole Plaza" will serve as Fox Sports’ media HQ for the month-long FIFA Women’s World Cup that begins June 6, according to Bruce Constantineau of the VANCOUVER SUN. Fox Sports Senior VP/Communications Lou D'Ermilio said, "It’s a beautiful location -- very picturesque -- and we think it’s the perfect setting." Constantineau notes the building "will house offices, a control room, a 'green room' (a waiting area for interviewees) and a flexible set with changeable backdrops for daytime and evening broadcasts." A small soccer field "is being built in front of the broadcast centre to allow on-air analysts to demonstrate game tactics." D’Ermilio said that the building "can accommodate multiple looks for the multiple shows that will originate from the facility." Other features: 15 cameras, "including a 'crane-cam' with the ability to extend" more than 16 yards; a retractable motorized rain shield; and a drone for "aerial shots in and around the set." D’Ermilio estimates Fox Sports "will have between 300 and 400 workers in Vancouver during the World Cup." He said that it "made sense for the U.S. broadcaster to base its operations in the city because BC Place is hosting the final on July 5," and the U.S. national team "will also play Nigeria at BC Place on June 16." Int'l broadcasters "will base their operations from a 12,000-square-metre site on Concord Pacific property near BC Place Stadium" (VANCOUVER SUN, 5/28).
