DC United Uses Mobile Dating App Tinder To Push Discounted Tickets

DC United has "been trying a new tactic when it comes to selling tickets," as a ticket rep recently offered "a Tinder-specific discount code for tickets to an upcoming match," according to Ben Bromley of SB NATION. DC United Dir of Communications Craig Stouffer said, "We’re actively exploring new and creative ways to grow our fan base, particularly emerging social channels that resonate directly with millennials." Bromely notes the team's Tinder promotion "seems like this was a one-time play, and it remains to be seen if Tinder is in any future plans as a method for marketing the team." The Hawks held a Tinder promotion this year, but that "was focused on having fans meet each other through Tinder while at a game" (SBNATION.com, 5/5).

HEARTS ON THEIR SLEEVES: In DC, Clinton Yates reported United's uniforms next year could feature "a new phrase to their mantra of 'win championships and serve the community.'" United "is teaming up with the advocacy organization DC Vote to create a new jersey for next season and will also receive a couple of awards from the group tonight." Nothing official "has been set" on the designs. DC Vote said that as part of the second annual 3 Star Ball, the team "will get the Raising the Bar Award for corporate social responsibility for companies and businesses and Coach Ben Olsen will be the recipient of the Democracy All Star award, given to 'an individual who has been exemplary to help expand the movement, the fight for equality'" (WASHINGTONPOST.com, 5/6).
