Pitt Hires Scott Barnes As AD After Convincing Him To Make Move From Utah State

The Univ. of Pittsburgh on Friday named Utah State AD Scott Barnes to the same position, and he will officially "start his tenure July 1, taking over for Steve Pederson, who was fired Dec. 17," according to Sam Werner of the PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE. A 14-person selection committee "narrowed the field down to four candidates for submission" to Pitt Chancellor Patrick Gallagher. Interim AD Randy Juhl said that the initial applicant pool "was divided into two types of candidates -- those who were nominated or applied for the job, and those who the committee sought out as potential good fits." Barnes "fell into the latter group." Juhl: "He’s one that we had to do a little bit of convincing to become a candidate" (PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE, 4/25). In Pittsburgh, Jerry DiPaola noted Utah State's student athletes had an 84% graduation rate and 3.17 GPA during Barnes' time at the school. Barnes also achieved "success in revenue-generating football." Barnes' skill from all accounts is "identifying the people who want to support the athletic program, building trusting relationships and then convincing them to donate their money." He did so "during his seven years at Utah State, soliciting record amounts of donations." Gallagher: "We know resources are needed to produce competitive teams. The only way you can make that work is if you have the robust fan base. It's a matter of connecting vision with a willingness to make a difference. You have to have the confidence that if you make a gift, it's going to happen. That's a big part of Scott's magic sauce." Pitt officials said that Barnes "was the unanimous choice" of the search committee. Gallagher "refused to reveal" Barnes' contract terms (PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW, 4/25). The TRIBUNE-REVIEW's DiPaola wrote in addition to Gallagher's "ability to make friends, raise money and plan for the future," he also "knows sports" (PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW, 4/26).
