Former NFLer, Radio Analyst Doug Buffone Passes Away At 70

Former NFLer and radio host DOUG BUFFONE died yesterday "at his Chicago home" at the age of 70, according to Brad Biggs of the CHICAGO TRIBUNE. From Day One, Buffone "connected with fans, and nearly everyone has a Buffone story because of his gift for making people laugh and his desire to share his love" for football (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 4/21). In Chicago, Ed Sherman writes Buffone "hit as hard as an analyst" for WSCR-AM "as he did as a player." No Bears game "was complete without tuning into the postgame 'DOUG & OB SHOW' on WSCR." Week after week, Buffone and his old teammate, ED O'BRADOVICH, "delivered a brutally honest assessment of the Bears" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 4/21). The TRIBUNE's Steve Rosenbloom wrote the "Doug & OB Show" became a "must-listen, especially if the Bears lost, and they did that a lot." Buffone "might've been a former Bear, but he was always a Bears fan." It "wasn’t an act." The rants "were real and painful" (CHICAGOTRIBUNE.com, 4/20). In Chicago, Mike Imrem writes Buffone "issued his analysis like a guy who also played some ball in his younger days." He was that "rare mix of a former excellent player and the guy who lives next door and sits on the next bar stool and drinks the same brand of beer as you" (Chicago DAILY HERALD, 4/21). The TRIBUNE's David Haugh writes a younger generation "will miss the guy who appeared" on the radio after Bears games to "express the passion they were feeling whether it was good, bad or ugly." Buffone "built his popularity on the basis of brutal honesty analyzing his beloved Bears" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 4/21). Also in Chicago, Rick Telander writes Buffone "had a certain kind of tenderness to him that was unusual and, notably, unexpected" (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 4/21).
