Legendary Packers PR Dir Lee Remmel Passes Away At 90 Years Old

Former Packers PR Dir LEE REMMEL, who "witnessed the emergence of the historic franchise, later covered icons CURLY LAMBEAU and VINCE LOMBARDI for the Green Bay Press-Gazette and then served as one of the club's great ambassadors, died at age 90" on Thursday, according to Tom Silverstein of the MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL. Packers President & CEO MARK MURPHY said, "The Packers lost a cherished family member." Silverstein notes Remmel "became the Packers' public relations director" in '74 and served until '04, when he "became the team's historian." Remmel in '45 "started covering the team" for the Press-Gazette. He either "covered or worked for every Packers coach" and -- as the lone rep in the PR category -- was honored at Super Bowl XL as one of 12 media contributors who "had worked all 40 Super Bowls." Remmel was "an old-school PR man who knew what reporters needed to do their job," and he had a "particularly close relationship" with former NFLer BRETT FAVRE (MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, 4/17). In Green Bay, Weston Hodkiewicz in a front-page piece notes Remmel was known for his "uncanny memory and was able to cite game scores and details from every era of Packers history." His tales of covering the Lombardi Era "became as legendary as the championship teams themselves" (GREEN BAY PRESS-GAZETTE, 4/17).
