IOC Reveals Officials' Payment Figures, Urges Other Sports Bodies To Follow Suit

The IOC today said that President Thomas Bach will get $244,744 (all figures U.S.) a year "to cover costs, as it revealed details of payments to top officials for the first time," according to Eric Bernaudeau of the AFP. The IOC's 14 exec board members, including its four VPs, "will get $900 a day when they are meeting and travelling on official business." Other IOC members will "get meeting and travel allowances of $450 a day." All IOC members will "get an annual payment of $7,000." Their travel and accommodation costs "are already paid by the IOC." IOC Ethics Commission Chair Youssoupha Ndiaye said announcing the payments policy "will lead to savings for the IOC and to transparency." The IOC also "called on other sporting federations to reveal payments to their leaders in a move that could put pressure" on organizations such as FIFA, which "does not reveal any details of the financial package" for President Sepp Blatter (AFP, 4/2). The AP's Stephen Wilson notes the IOC "released its 'indemnity policy' covering the reimbursements for Bach and other members as part of the 'Olympic Agenda 2020' reforms passed in December." IOC presidents and members are "considered volunteers and do not receive a salary, but their travel, housing costs and other expenses on Olympic duty are covered." The IOC said that Bach "works 365 days a year but will forego the daily reimbursements received by others members." Bach's payment figure "does not include" his house in Switzerland (AP, 4/2).
