Names In The News

NEW YORK magazine's Chris Smith profiles Mets P MATT HARVEY, noting he "yearns to make best-dressed lists just like his friend," NHL Rangers G HENRIK LUNDQVIST. It is former MLBer DEREK JETER, who "perfected the art of saying nothing memorable into a microphone, who has counseled Harvey to keep doing what he's doing." Harvey "grew up a Yankees fan," and now, after signing on with Jeter's The Players Tribune, "has business cards that read New York Bureau Chief." The Mets now are "collaborating more with Harvey," as they are "giving away a Harvey-designed T-shirt at Citi Field" on April 17 (NEW YORK magazine, 3/23 issue).

PAY UP: A Virginia court yesterday ruled that Ravens LB TERRELL SUGGS "owes his former agent GARY WICHARD, who died more than four years ago, more than $178,000 in commissions" from his '13 season paychecks. Wichard "had negotiated Suggs' five-year contract," which went from '09-13. Suggs paid Wichard in '09 and '10 and "after Wichard suddenly passed away in March 2011, he continued to pay his estate for the commissions associated" with the '11 and '12 seasons. But Suggs "filed a grievance" with the NFLPA, which "monitors player-agent conduct, after he failed to pay commissions" for the '13 season (ESPN.com, 3/24).

FIGHTING TO THE END: USA TODAY's Gene Seymour reviews the memoir of late ESPN anchor STUART SCOTT, titled, "EVERY DAY I FIGHT." Reading the book is "almost like listening to him speak to you in his familiar baritone, albeit more intimately." The book, on some level, is a "print version of one of those 'SPORTSCENTER' recaps where you already know how it turns out." Scott, as he "often did in life, makes you enjoy the ride, even at its rougher points." Scott's "candor and combative energy are what drives his story" (USA TODAY, 3/25).

THE GOOD STUFF: The ECHL Orlando Solar Bears are "launching a street hockey program at the Eatonville branch of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida, donating about 40 hockey sticks of various sizes, two pairs of goaltender pads and indoor hockey balls." Solar Bears Chair JOE HALESKI said that the team "intends to make similar donations of hockey equipment to other Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida" (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 3/24)....Bruins LW BRAD MARCHAND yesterday held his eighth annual Cuts for a Cause, which lets auction winners "shave the heads of their favorite Bruin ... with all the proceeds going to the Boston Bruins Foundation and the Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center" (BOSTON HERALD, 3/25).

NAMES: Basketball HOFer ARTIS GILMORE last week filed a federal lawsuit against the ABA Players’ Retirement Plan, “arguing that the pension plan shorted him and now owes about $450,000” (FLORIDA TIMES-UNION, 3/24)....Cowboys QB TONY ROMO is “getting into the fantasy football business” as an equity investor in the ’15 National Fantasy Football Convention that will be held July 10-12 at the Venetian Resort Hotel Casino in Las Vegas.
