Overnight Ratings: ABC's Lakers-Cavs On Top; "30 For 30" Premiere Faces Strong Competition

ABC led all weekend sports telecasts with a 2.7 overnight for Lakers-Cavaliers yesterday in the late afternoon window. That figure beat out CBS’ rating for the final round of the PGA Tour Farmers Insurance Open (2.5). However, the figure for Jason Day’s win in a four-way playoff at Torrey Pines is up from a 2.3 last year, when Scott Stallings held off five other golfers for a one-stroke victory. ESPN’s Kentucky-Florida was the top-rated college basketball game this weekend, drawing a 2.0 overnight late in primetime on Saturday.

TOUGH COMPETITION: ESPN drew a 0.5 overnight for the premiere of its latest “30 for 30” film, “Of Miracles And Men,” which chronicled the rise of the Soviet hockey program leading into the ’80 Lake Placid Games. The film had stiff competition from the Grammys on CBS, the return of AMC’s “The Walking Dead” and the premiere of AMC’s “Better Call Saul.”

JUST FOR KICKS: ESPN drew a 0.5 overnight for the U.S.-Panama men’s soccer friendly yesterday afternoon. Figures for UniMas’ telecast of the game were not available at presstime. By comparison, NBC drew a 0.8 overnight for the EPL Liverpool-Everton match on Saturday afternoon.

The chart below lists overnight ratings from weekend sports telecasts on broadcast TV.
