Pittsburgh Interim AD Will Lead Search Committee For Pederson's Replacement

Juhl is not considered a candidate
for the vacant AD position
Univ. of Pittsburgh Chancellor & CEO Patrick Gallagher yesterday "took the first substantive step" to find the school’s new AD by naming interim AD Randy Juhl "head of an internal search committee," according to Sam Werner of the PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE. Gallagher said that Juhl, who is not considered a candidate, and the committee "are in no rush" to find the next AD after firing Steve Pederson in December. Gallagher said a hire is still "a good number of weeks away." He added, "I'm much more focused on getting the right person." Gallagher said that he would "probably prefer candidates with a sports background and experience in a collegiate athletic department." Werner notes Juhl’s committee will "have representation from faculty, coaches, senior administrators and trustees, among others." Gallagher did not disclose the terms of Pederson's buyout, but said that it was "based on a specific amount, not the remaining salary on his deal, which had four years left." Meanwhile, Gallagher said that he was "happy with Heinz Field as the long-term venue for home football games." He said, "I'm certainly not looking at an on-site (stadium). I'm sure to the dismay of some." Gallagher added that while Pitt is "looking at improvements for its Olympics sports, he doesn't anticipate any major capital projects for the 'big sports' any time soon" (PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE, 1/13). In Pittsburgh, Jerry DiPaola notes Gallagher yesterday "pledged to be committed to each of Pitt's athletic programs, especially in light of the school's admission to the ACC." Gallagher said, "We are in a great athletic conference. If you are going to be in, be in. If you're not in to do it right, you shouldn't be doing it" (PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW, 1/13).
