In Sacramento, Dale Kasler notes the NBA Kings and their development partner Thursday “named the contractor that will build the hotel tower and other developments adjacent to the team’s new downtown arena.” S.F.-based Swinerton Builders was named to the $200M-plus project by the Kings and JMA Ventures (SACRAMENTO BEE, 1/9).

BACK TO SQUARE ONE? In Phoenix, Ray Stern noted USA Basketball “may not be moving to Tempe after all following the collapse of the USA Place redevelopment project.” Arizona State Univ. on Thursday announced that the USA Place project was “dead but that it was committed to putting a hotel and conference [center] at the site.” USA Basketball Chief Media & Communications Officer Craig Miller said that he “wasn't aware the USA Place deal has fallen apart” (PHOENIXNEWTIMES.com, 1/8).

HORSE PLAY
: In California, Joe Tash noted the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club's budget for this year projects a "revenue increase” of 14.5% for a total of $44.8M, “largely because of more racing days.” Wagering “represents the largest share of the club’s total revenue,” and the ‘15 budget “projects an increase” of $4M. Club revenue “also took a hit” in ‘14 when racing on the track’s newly expanded turf course was “temporarily suspended during the summer meet after fatal injuries to four horses” (DELMARTIMES.net, 1/8).
