In West Palm Beach, Matt Porter notes ESPN will air “The U Part 2” as part of its "30 for 30" series "following the Heisman Trophy presentation" on Dec. 13. The sequel will again be directed by Billy Corben and "pick up where the original left off, beginning with the rise from the ashes" of the Butch Davis era and the '01 BCS national championship through the Nevin Shapiro scandal and into today (PALM BEACH POST, 9/16). In Oklahoma City, Mel Bracht notes ESPN also has scheduled a documentary on former NFLer Brian Bosworth for Oct. 28 (NEWSOK.com, 9/15). Other "30 for 30" films slated for the fall center around basketball game fixing at Boston College during the '78-79 season, the earthquake during the '89 World Series, Knicks' championship teams from the early '70s, former MLBers Livan and Orlando Hernandez and former NFLer Randy Moss (THE DAILY).

BACK ON TRACK: In Pittsburgh, Rob Biertempfel reports nearly two weeks after having a "life-saving heart transplant," Pirates TV analyst Kent Tekulve "expects to be back in the booth for spring training." Tekulve suffered a massive heart attack on Christmas Eve, and as his "condition worsened, he was unable to work the daily grind of broadcasting games." Ken Macha replaced Tekulve on Root Sports Pittsburgh's gameday crew (PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW, 9/16).

MULTITASKING: NESN yesterday announced Guerin Austin will join the RSN as a reporter, anchor and host. She will serve as the net's Bruins rink-side reporter and will be doing features on NESN Sports Today and NESN Live. Austin previously served as host of Caps Red Line, a weekly behind-the-scenes look at the Capitals airing on the NHL Network. She also served as a morning host and reporter at the Fox affiliate in Richmond (NESN). In Boston, Chad Finn notes Guerin replaces Jamie Erdahl, who is leaving NESN to become "lead college football sideline reporter" on CBS Sports Network. Erdhal also will work SEC games for CBS (BOSTON GLOBE, 9/16).

TNT’s Stan Van Gundy, ESPN’s Tim Reed, NBA Playoffs and NFL Draft

On this week’s pod, SBJ’s Austin Karp has two Big Get interviews. The first is with TNT’s Stan Van Gundy as he breaks down the NBA Playoffs from the booth. Later in the show, we hear from ESPN’s VP of Programming and Acquisitions Tim Reed as the NFL Draft gets set to kick off on Thursday night in Motown. SBJ’s Tom Friend also joins the show to share his insights into NBA viewership trends.
