CFL Facing Possible Work Stoppage As Players Seek Larger Share Of League Revenue

The CFL and its players are "so far apart at the bargaining table" that for the "first time, players won’t rule out a work stoppage this season to get what they feel is a fair deal," according to Paul Friesen of the WINNIPEG SUN. The CFLPA "wants a percentage of league revenue, the same way the pie is divided in other sports." But the league is "refusing to return to that model, which was in place from 2006-09, offering only a hard salary cap." The league's new TV deal has "more than doubled in value," to some C$40M per season, so there is "more money on the table than ever before." Bargaining between the two sides "broke off more than a week ago, with the union to discuss its next move, and the league’s ultimatum, at its annual general meeting in Las Vegas, at the end of March" (WINNIPEG SUN, 3/21). Meanwhile, in Winnipeg, Kirk Penton notes the CFL's 12-member rules committee on Thursday night voted to "recommend that pass interference be subject to video review this season." The league's BOG "has to pass the proposal later this spring to make it official, but it usually rubber stamps any recommendations from the rules committee" (WINNIPEG SUN, 3/21).
