Broncos Sign John Elway To Three-Year Extension Through '17, Add GM To Title

Elway adds the GM position to his title as part of his three-year contract extension
The Broncos have signed Exec VP/Football Operations JOHN ELWAY to a three-year contract extension through the ’17 season. As part of the deal, Elway has added the GM position to his title (Broncos). In Denver, Mike Klis notes Elway was “entering the final year on the original contract" he signed with Broncos owner PAT BOWLEN in January '11. Broncos President JOE ELLIS “ripped up the final year of Elway's old contract” and gave him a new four-year deal. Ellis said, “It seemed like not a very hard decision to make. Whatever learning curve there was for John Elway, it didn't last very long." He added, “We think it solidifies his standing across the league and emphasizes he oversees everything as it has to do with Broncos football” (DENVER POST, 2/13). Also in Denver, Benjamin Hochman wrote under the header, “John Elway The Executive Outpacing Elway The Player So Far For Broncos.” Broncos fans will “surely high-five to this news,” but they “must also hold him accountable in the coming seasons, regardless that he's No. 7.” However, there “aren't many signs that criticism will be necessary” (DENVERPOST.com, 2/12). ESPN.com's Jeff Legwold noted Elway's duties "remain the same, as he'll continue to oversee the team's coaching staff as well as its personnel department, and strength and conditioning and training staffs" (ESPN.com, 2/12). Legwold in a separate piece wrote under the header, "Football Guy Elway In It For The Long Haul" (ESPN.com, 2/12).
