Media Notes

In Hartford, John Altavilla noted "neither UConn or SNY own broadcast rights" to the 18 women's basketball games the school will play in the American Athletic Conference this season. Because the AAC sold the rights to ESPN, it is "only through the contractual kindness of ESPN that SNY has the right to telecast 17 games to its viewership this season." But SNY can only show the games "within its main 'footprint' and off the satellite dishes that deflects its signal elsewhere." Altavilla: "If I am SNY today, I am not very happy about this turn of events. ... It won't surprise me if it decides it wants out of this deal" (HARTFORDCOURANT.com, 11/6).

LEFT OFF THE ROSTER: CBSSports.com has laid off two of its national baseball writers, Danny Knobler and Scott Miller. Knobler had been with the site since '08, Miller since '99. The moves continue a period of turbulence for the site, which earlier this year parted ways with its Senior VP & GM Jason Kint and NFL writer Clark Judge (Eric Fisher, Staff Writer).

SILVER LININGS
: Media writer Jim Romenesko reported ESPN blogger Nate Silver has "hired 'Numbers Guy' columnist Carl Bialik away from the Wall Street Journal." Silver wrote on his Twitter feed, "He's a perfect fit for us and we're thrilled to have him on the team. ... At 538, @CarlBialik will have a broad and news-driven focus, providing his reporting & analysis across sports, economics and other subjects" (JIMROMENESKO.com, 11/5).

LET'S MAKE A DEAL: K.C.-based KMCI-Ind. yesterday announced a TV rights deal with MLS Sporting K.C. KMCI beginning next year will televise up to 26 regular season games. Select Sporting K.C. programming will air on sister station KSHB-NBC (KMCI)....The Marlins yesterday announced a deal with Clear Channel Media and Entertainment Miami, making WINZ-AM the team's official radio broadcast home starting with the '14 season. WINZ will air live game broadcasts, pre- and postgame analysis and daily recaps with coaches and players. WAXY-AM had been the Marlins' flagship station since '07 (THE DAILY).
