MLB Avg. Attendance Down 1%, With 16 Extra Rainouts Compared To Last Season

MLB teams averaged 30,514 fans per game this season, down around 1% from '12. However, this season's average is still ahead of the final figures from '09-11. Teams filled MLB ballparks to just over 70% capacity during the 2,426 dates this season. Among AL clubs, the Yankees led the way with 40,489 fans per game, but were down 7%. The Twins, Rangers and White Sox also saw sharp drops at the gate. Despite finishing last in the AL East, the Blue Jays led all MLB clubs in gains at the gate (+21%). Also seeing strong gains were the Orioles and A’s (THE DAILY). With last night's AL tiebreaker, MLB ended the '13 regular season with a total attendance of 74.03 million, down 1%. The total attendance decrease is the first for the league since '10. MLB attendance was hampered by 34 rainouts before the All-Star break this season, far exceeding the 21 posted for all of the '12 season. MLB had just three more rainouts in the second-half of the '13 season, allowing it to close the gap somewhat on last year's pace. With this year's total, MLB also extends a run in which the last 10 years have represented the 10 best-attended seasons in league history (Eric Fisher, Staff Writer).
