In Portland, Matthew Kish noted Nike Chair PHIL KNIGHT and Columbia Sportswear President & CEO TIM BOYLE are “among the first donors to a new political action committee focused on higher education reform.” Knight contributed $65,000 and Boyle’s donated $62,500 to the Oregonians for Higher Education Excellence PAC. Former Univ. of Oregon AD PAT KILKENNY also contributed $65,000 (BIZJOURNALS.com, 5/22).

CASHING OUT: Also in Portland, Allan Brettman cited an SEC filing as indicating that the Nike BOD Compensation Committee on Friday gave Nike President & CEO MARK PARKER “nearly 190,000 shares of Nike stock, scheduled to be cashed in May 18, 2017.” Parker at that time would be “entitled to the dividends that would have accumulated over those five years.” The shares as of yesterday were worth about $20.5M (OREGONLIVE.com, 5/22).

NAMES: Late Penn State football coach JOE PATERNO earned a state pension of $13.4M for "his 61-year coaching career.” Paterno’s family yesterday said that his wife SUE would receive an initial payment of $10.1M by the end of May, "with the rest to be paid out over the next two years” (AP, 5/22)….ESPN President JOHN SKIPPER is scheduled to be a keynote speaker at Broadcasting & Cable’s "TV 3.0: What’s Next" summit in N.Y. on June 6 (THE DAILY)….The National Association for Multi-Ethnicity in Communications named ESPNU and ESPNHS VP ROSALYN DURANT to its list of Next-Generation Leaders (MULTICHANNEL NEWS, 5/21 issue)….The NBA D-League awarded Bakersfield Jam Managing Partner DAVID HIGDON Team Exec of the Year (NBA)….Pennsylvania Gov. Later in the show, we hear from ESPN’s VP of Programming and Acquisitions Tim Reed as the NFL Draft gets set to kick off on Thursday night in Motown.
