Jaguars' Khan Wants Team To Connect With Local Fans, Still Believes In Int'l Growth

Jaguars Owner Shahid Khan made a couple media appearances in recent days, and he noted the team has to “connect with the fans” and get some “energy in the stadium” next season. Khan, speaking to Jacksonville's WTEV-Fox, said, “We have to have the team spirit in the Jaguars, as well as obviously on the field, and we’ve got to grow the fan base.” Khan has previously expressed his desire to expand the Jaguars' global presence, and he said, "We live in a global world. The NFL is a product that is going to expand internationally. I think somebody is going to do that. The Jaguars should be a key part of that. It’s going to give us an identity fan base outside Jacksonville. It will give us exposure to Jacksonville. Jacksonville should ride the NFL’s coattails, quite frankly. It’s a very powerful brand. It needs to do something for Jacksonville.” Khan noted the team has lowered ticket prices and said, “We have to work with ticket prices. If we could play a game, let’s say, internationally that would also lower really the price people would have to pay (in terms of season tickets)” (WTEV-Fox, 1/30). Meanwhile, CNBC’s Darren Rovell noted Khan earlier this month "said a fan is somebody who is a season-ticket holder," and some people "were offended by that.” Khan: “This was kind of a lighthearted comment and really a salute to the season-ticket holders. I got a laugh out of it from the people who were there, but this is something that doesn’t translate, obviously, on Twitter. So I learned my lesson and I have to be absolutely careful how it translates in all the medias” ("Squawk on the Street," CNBC, 1/30).
