NASCAR team owner RICK HENDRICK "returned home Tuesday, a day after he suffered minor injuries when his plane ran off the runway in Key West." Hendrick suffered a "broken rib and a broken shoulder when the brakes failed upon landing the Gulfstream G150 at Key West International Airport on Monday night." Hendrick, his wife, LINDA, and the two pilots "all were released from Lower Keys Medical Center on Tuesday morning and returned to Charlotte." Linda Hendrick "suffered minor cuts and bruises," while the pilots were not injured (AP, 11/1). The plane the Hendricks were on crash landed at Key West Int'l Airport after it "lost its brakes on landing and ran off the runway," according to the team and the Monroe County (Fla.) Sheriff''s Department. The jet was registered to Jimmie Johnson Racing II Inc. and co-owned by Hendrick Motorsports (SCENEDAILY.com, 10/31).

DETROIT ROCK CITY: Cavaliers Owner and Quicken Loans Chair & Founder DAN GILBERT was profiled on CBS' "Evening News" last night, as he is "leading a migration to downtown Detroit." CBS' Dean Reynolds said to Giilbert, “You're taking a huge bet on Detroit.” Gilbert said of his hometown, “It's a good city to bet on because although the city's been down, it's rarely been out.” Reynolds noted Gilbert one year ago "moved himself and 1,700 Quicken Loans employees from the affluent suburbs to the city to gleaming, high-tech offices. It's an oasis of activity in a city where a third of all office space was vacant last year.” Reynolds said Gilbert and his partners, who include Pro Basketball HOFer MAGIC JOHNSON, “have poured $100 million into purchases and renovations in the city's core.” Gilbert: “These are skyscrapers in a major American city and need a little bit of love here and some young energy in it. Once you do that, these things come to life" (“Evening News,” CBS, 10/31).

ON TRIAL: In London, Duncan Gardham reports EPL club Chelsea Owner ROMAN ABRAMOVICH yesterday was "in the witness box at the High Court in London." Abramovich is "being sued for $6.5 billion by BORIS BEREZOVSKY, his former associate who accuses Mr Abramovich of swindling him out of shares in companies they allegedly set up together." Abramovich "acknowledged Mr Berezovsky’s role in helping him to win friends in the Kremlin," but described Berezovsky as a "megalomaniac" who "behaved like a child" (London TELEGRAPH, 11/1).

FIGHTING FOR SEATS: In Toronto, Rick Westhead reports Raptors season-ticket holder MARK MICHALKOFF "alleges the team’s owner, Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, treated him 'like dirt' by installing a new row of premium seats directly in front of his $915 courtside seats." A trial over the dispute "is scheduled to start Nov. 15 in Ontario Superior Court in Toronto and is expected to last a week." MLSE said in court filings that Michalkoff's company, DLF Solutions Inc., "breached its contract because it made a profit off its Raptors tickets" (TORONTO STAR, 11/1).

JOURNALISM SCHOOL: Univ. of Maryland's Philip Merrill College of Journalism announced the creation of the Shirley Povich Center for Sports Journalism, named for the late Washington Post sports writer and columnist. The center was made possible by a $1M challenge gift from Povich's children, MAURY, LYNN and DAVID. Former Washington Post Assistant Managing Editor for Sports GEORGE SOLOMON will serve as Dir of the program (THE DAILY).

POWER PLAYERS: The BOSTON BUSINESS JOURNAL released its first “Power 50” list of Boston-area business influencers. Included on the list are Celtics Managing Partner & CEO WYC GROUSBECK, Patriots Owner ROBERT KRAFT and Red Sox President & CEO LARRY LUCCHINO (BOSTON BUSINESS JOURNAL, 10/28 issue)....The ORLANDO BUSINESS JOURNAL named Disney Sports Enterprises & Downtown Disney Senior VP KEN POTROCK among its “Most Influential Businessmen: Sport Business.” Potrock said of the riskiest thing he’s ever done, “While in Disney marketing, I sent a memo to our company’s president outlining what I thought should be done with the sports division. NAMES: BILLBOARD.biz's Juliana Koranteng reported Metallica's Oct. 28 show in India, part of the F1 Rocks series organized around F1 events, was canceled after "angry fans reportedly damaged stage equipment worth an estimated $200,000." Four execs from local promoter DNA Entertainment Networks have been "arrested on fraud charges" (BILLBOARD.biz, 10/31)....In N.Y., Neil Genzlinger wrote REED MARTIN, AUSTIN TICHENOR and MATT RIPPY's “The Complete World of Sports (abridged)” is “pitched directly, and proudly, at the juvenile in sports fans of all ages.” The show is a “manically paced collection of one-liners and puns with a little audience participation thrown in.” The three main characters deliver material in “a parody of ESPN’s ‘SportsCenter,” proceed to divide sports into nine categories and then visit each continent to review what is or used to be played there” (N.Y.
