Alleged Miami Marlins Logo Gets Subdued Response Inside Team's Clubhouse

The leak of an alleged logo for the Miami Marlins has “drawn strong reaction on the Web, much of it negative,” but the reaction “was subdued around the Marlins' clubhouse,” according to Craig Davis of the South Florida SUN-SENTINEL. Marlins LF Logan Morrison said, "It looks like a Monopoly 'M.' ... I don't know, I'd have to see it on the uniform. It won't be black and teal. We'll be the skill boys chasing the rainbow, I guess." The Marlins “haven't confirmed or denied the authenticity of the purported logo.” Marlins President David Samson in a text message wrote that the team “would have no comment until the logo and uniforms are unveiled on Nov. 11, the day the name officially changes to Miami Marlins.” Davis notes the fact that Samson “didn't disavow the image circulating on the Internet added credence to the belief that it is either the logo that has been chosen or one being strongly considered.” If genuine, it “suggests the Marlins intend to key their identity more to Miami than the namesake fish.” It would “fit with the design philosophy of the ballpark now more than 80 percent complete in Little Havana.” The multiple colors “fit the palate that has been associated with the new park” (South Florida SUN-SENTINEL, 9/22). L.A. Times columnist Bill Plaschke said, "That logo feels like Miami, feels like South Beach. I like it" ("Around The Horn," ESPN, 9/21).

LENDING A HAND: In Ft. Lauderdale, Joe Cavaretta notes Samson “witnessed an apparently fatal crash on Florida's Turnpike that continued to back up southbound traffic for hours on Wednesday morning.” Samson was driving to the Marlins' ballpark construction site and “saw a pickup truck crash into the back of a red utility truck.” He said that "he, the utility truck driver and ultimately others ran to the pickup truck in an effort to help the driver” (SUN-SENTINEL.com, 9/21). Samson yesterday downplayed “what he calls a perception that he was a hero for trying to rescue a man from a crashed car.” Samson: “A man lost his life. There was nothing heroic done by me at all. Anybody would’ve done what I did. I saw it, I stopped my car. I went out to try and help him and I simply couldn’t help him and it’s horrendous.” He added, “I was not strong enough to open the door to help him, I wasn’t strong enough to save him” (PALMBEACHPOST.com, 9/21).
