Names In The News

In K.C., Kent Babb profiled Chiefs Chair & CEO CLARK HUNT, who in the past five years since his father LAMAR HUNT's death "has revealed his leadership style.” Clark Hunt is “at time ruthless and at all times, competitive, making changes his father wouldn’t and helping to craft the Chiefs in his image.” He "had stepped off the path cut by his father." But even as Hunt was "shifting directions ... he reflected upon Lamar’s words: Remember the fans and do Arrowhead right.” The organization's “new philosophy has rubbed some the wrong way, but there’s no denying that the team is more successful now than when Clark Hunt began running it" (K.C. STAR, 8/27).

PROVING PEOPLE WRONG: ESPN.com's Ted Miller profiled Pac-12 Commissioner LARRY SCOTT under the header, "Larry Scott Brings Change To Pac-12." After Scott left the WTA to join the Pac-10 in '09, several people said that conference officials "don't know what they're doing." Univ. of Arizona AD GREG BYRNE, who was leading the Mississippi State athletic department at the time, recalls, "Oh, yeah, I was surprised. My wife was like, ‘What are they doing hiring a guy from the professional tennis tour?’” (ESPN.com, 8/26).

AN ODD PAIR: In California, Jay Paris noted Chargers President DEAN SPANOS, like his father ALEX SPANOS, “is a dedicated Republican and has proved it repeatedly with significant donations to the party.”  But his support of Texas Gov. RICK PERRY's Presidential campaign “at Thursday’s meet-and-greet at the Hyatt in La Jolla is striking." Paris: “How can Spanos throw his weight and checkbook behind Perry’s values, while at the same time preparing to ask San Diego city and county governments to supply tax dollars for his proposed downtown stadium? Hard to have it both ways” (NORTH COUNTY TIMES, 8/28).

BEST WISHES: NFL player agent DAVID CORNWELL is recovering after he suffered a stroke last week. Cornwell posted several updates on Twitter about his condition. He wrote, “The victim of a stroke ! Don't know which is more inexplicable. … Fact that I had a stroke or the fact that the clot resolved itself in ambulance without permanent damage. Blessed n grateful. N scared!” On Saturday he added, “Been in hospital since Tuesday with an extraordinary nursing staff as we try to figure out the cause” (THE DAILY).

FAST FOOD: The N.Y. TIMES' Adam Bryant chats with Levy Restaurants President & CEO ANDY LANSING as part of the "Corner Office" feature. Lansing said, “I have a pretty nontraditional approach to hiring. I hire for two traits -- I hire for nice and I hire for passion.” Asked what is unusual about his culture, Lansing said, “We have this really fun thing called, ‘On the Road With Andy,’ where I’ll take my flip cam with me whenever I go to one of our locations and we’ll do a video either about a great employee we want to highlight or about an incredible food item they’re doing that I want the rest of the company to see” (N.Y. TIMES, 8/28).

NAMES: The Myra Kraft Giving Back Scholarship Fund, in memory of Patriots Owner ROBERT KRAFT's late wife, “continues to grow by the day.” Kraft said, “It’s unbelievable, this fund will be over $3.5 million by this weekend.” Kraft said Colts QB PEYTON MANNING and Giants QB ELI MANNING made “substantial donations.” He added, “Thousands of gifts have been received and I’m answering every one of them, and my son, JOSH, is writing letters to everyone” (BOSTON GLOBE, 8/28)....Buccaneers C JEFF FAINE “has amassed interests in 14 restaurants in Ohio, several nightclubs and an office building in downtown Orlando, a shopping center in Tampa, and a growing collection of rental houses near Orlando’s urban core.” Faine said that he “realizes he should leverage his sports fame while he can.” He said, “I want to be able to set myself up. For some reason, I think the doors open a lot more easily now than they will later” (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 8/29)....Chelsea FC Owner ROMAN ABRAMOVICH was spotted at the Banshee Pub in N.Y. watching his EPL club's game against Norwich City on Saturday (BOSTON GLOBE, 8/29).

IN MEMORY: Former CFL Winnipeg Blue Bombers Chair KEN HILDAHL "died suddenly, Friday, of an apparent heart attack" at the age of 61 (WINNIPEG SUN, 8/27). Hildahl was a “charismatic and caring leader who had time for everybody (WINNIPEG FREE PRESS, 8/28).
