What's Up For The Weekend With TeamWork Consulting President Buffy Filippell

Ever wonder how executives in sports business spend their weekends? THE DAILY this week continues "What's Up For The Weekend," providing readers with an inside look at people in our industry. This week, we catch up with TeamWork Consulting President BUFFY FILIPPELL, who chatted with Staff Writer Theresa Manahan.

Q: What are your plans for this weekend?
Filippell: Along with a little gardening, I’ll be getting back on the bike for my first training ride and run since defending my 55 & over age group win in the Cleveland Sprint Triathlon. It was only the second triathlon I’ve done, and I faced stiff competition from all of five women in two years. I find triathlons extremely rewarding, and it helps me to keep up with my 21-year-old son, DAVIS, who placed second in the Olympic division.

Q: What do you like to watch and read on the weekend?
Filippell: I’m a big fan of tennis and golf -- live and on television -- and I thoroughly enjoy the Sunday N.Y. Times. As an entrepreneur, I get a lot of business ideas from the paper, about networking particularly.

Q: Best weekend ever?
Filippell: I love spending Labor Day Weekend in New York with my mother at the US Open Tennis Championships. She has battled breast cancer for a long time, and I admire her courage and strength. I started attending the Open while working for Wilson Sporting Goods, then when I was ANDREA JAEGER’s agent, and I have gone there almost every year since. I played tennis in college. I lost in the fastest match in tennis history -- 15 minutes from on the court to off the court, and that included 5 minutes of warm-up. USTA National Collegiate Tennis Championships in 1974. That was when you could raise your hand and walk on.

Q: Favorite weekend getaway?
Filippell: For quite a long time we had a jet ski out on Lake Erie at Catawba Island. I was able to water ski behind it each weekend. The fact that I had skis and a tow rope in my garage gave me such credibility when I was conducting a search for the new CEO of USA Waterskiing last year.

Q: Guilty weekend pleasure?
Filippell: Watching movies with my husband. I’m a big fan of JULIE ANDREWS and “The Sound of Music.” Our wedding march was the same as hers in the movie. My husband favors movies of the same period of history, but he prefers “The Winds of War.” Our past lives must have intersected during World War II. He’s Italian and I’m part German and British/Scottish.

Q: Favorite local restaurant?
Filippell: There's a lot of great restaurants in Cleveland. With John Carroll University right in our neighborhood, I love going to their Pizzazz pizza parlor and ordering chicken salad.
