Sports Authority Approved To Take Over Broncos Stadium Naming Rights

The Broncos and the Metropolitan Football Stadium District have approved a tentative deal with Sports Authority for naming rights to the team's stadium. The facility is expected to change its name to Sports Authority Field at Mile High in time for the Broncos' season opener on Sept. 12. Invesco Limited had owned the naming rights since '01. A press conference will be held on Sept. 8 to unveil details of the new agreement (THE DAILY). In Denver, Mike Klis reports although the Broncos and Sports Authority "have also reached an agreement in principle to extend their naming-rights deal through 2035, the stadium district postponed that 15-year segment of their vote until consultant and past stadium-district chairman Tim Romani can complete an analysis on other NFL naming-rights deals." Sports Authority "will pay an average $6 million a year, with 50 percent going to the Broncos and the other 50 percent earmarked to the stadium district, which will use its funds on capital improvements to the facility." All prominent signage at the stadium "will be changed in time for the team's regular-season opener." It "seemed to impress" the district board members that Sports Authority "has its headquarters, 32 stores and 1,700 employees in Colorado; the sporting-goods company donates $1 million annually to local sports-oriented foundations; and it promises to enhance the Broncos' facility through interior and exterior improvements" (DENVER POST, 8/17).
