MLB Giants Manager Calls Radio Host's Critical Twitter Comments "Racist"

Bruno on Twitter called Bochy
a "coward"
MLB Giants manager Bruce Bochy Friday “ripped nationally syndicated talk-show host Tony Bruno for a ‘racist comment’" Bruno made about Giants P Ramon Ramirez, according to Henry Schulman of the S.F. CHRONICLE. The Giants and Phillies were involved in a bench-clearing brawl Friday after Ramirez hit Phillies CF Shane Victorino in the lower back with a pitch. Bruno, a noted Phillies fan, tweeted that the Giants "were ‘gutless’ and Bochy a ‘coward for having his illegal alien pitcher hit a guy.’" Bochy said, "For a guy to make a racist comment like that and have the ear of so many people, that bothers me.” Bruno has since “removed the tweet and apologized on Facebook for the ‘illegal alien’ remark, though he again called Bochy a coward” (S.F. CHRONICLE, 8/8). Bruno on his Facebook page wrote, "My stupid and insensitive twitter post was up less than one minute before I realized it was caustic. It was removed immediately and I typed a quick apology on twitter and here.” Bruno’s show is broadcast in the S.F. area on KNBR-AM (ESPN.com, 8/7). YAHOO SPORTS’ Kevin Kaduk wrote Bruno “doesn't have any defense here.” It is “possible to get heated and angry during a sporting [event] when you're a fan,” but “you just don't call someone an ‘illegal alien’ -- much less type it into Twitter and distribute it to your 12,000+ followers -- by accident.” Kaduk: “At the very least, he owes Ramon Ramirez and his listeners -- what's left of them, anyway -- an apology that's much more contrite” (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 8/6). In San Jose, Carl Steward wrote it is "hard to tell what the repercussions will be for Bruno, who has already been marginalized on KNBR, but this certainly isn't going to boost his likeability factor anywhere" (MERCURYNEWS.com, 8/6).
