In N.Y., Katie Thomas reports U.S. District Judge FRANK DAMRELL JR. Wednesday ruled that the Univ. of California-Davis "failed to offer enough athletic opportunities for women." The school had been "sued by a group of female wrestlers charging sex discrimination." However, Damrell "found that the female wrestlers failed to prove that university officials, who were listed as defendants, deliberately discriminated against them." Damrell "will decide at a later date on the amount of damages the plaintiffs could receive" (N.Y. TIMES, 8/5).

Lysacek signs representation deal with CAA
FREE SKATE: CAA has signed Olympic Gold Medal-winning figure skater EVAN LYSACEK for representation. Lysacek, who at the '10 Vancouver Games was the first American to win the men's singles since BRIAN BOITANO in '88, will be represented by a team of agents led by JEFF JACOBS and LOWELL TAUB. He was formally repped by IMG (Liz Mullen, SportsBusiness Journal).

: MLB.com's Bill Chastain noted CNBC.com sports business reporter DARREN ROVELL sang both "The Star-Spangled Banner" and "O Canada" prior to Thursday afternoon's Blue Jays-Rays game at Tropicana Field. Rovell also "interviewed Rays president MATT SILVERMAN, reported live throughout CNBC's Business Day programming, and took part in the Rays' first-ever Tweet-Up." As part of the promotion, the Rays "published tweets using the Rays Tweet-up hashtag on the RaysVision scoreboard throughout the game" (MLB.com, 8/4). Golf Channel’s Erik Kuselias said of Rovell's effort, “Anybody who is willing to get up there and do that gets an ‘A’ from me. An ‘A’ for admirable” (“Morning Drive,” Golf Channel, 8/5).

COURT REPORT: Mecklenburg County (N.C.). District Judge JENA CULLER Thursday "ordered the unsealing of secret documents" in NASCAR Chair & CEO BRIAN FRANCE's "legal battle with his former wife." It will "likely be months before the files are unsealed." France's attorneys are "expected to appeal Culler's ruling" (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 8/5)....The Nevada Supreme Court Thursday found that a civil lawsuit accusing Steelers QB BEN ROETHLISBERGER of sexual assault "will be tried in the county where it was originally filed." Roethlisberger had "filed a motion for a change of venue, asking that the case be moved to Douglas County" from Washoe County (PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE, 8/5)....Minnesota-based Vintage Sports Authentics Owner STEVEN JENSEN "was charged Thursday with selling phony jerseys that he claimed were worn during games by prominent athletes including" Yankees 3B ALEX RODRIGUEZ and former MLBer MARK MCGWIRE (Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE, 8/5).

NAMES: Former Vail Resorts President ANDY DALY and his partners in a new company, KEN and TOM GART, “had the high bid of $1.4 million for the Powderhorn Resort” in Colorado (DENVER POST, 8/5)….Thursday at Atlanta Motor Speedway, LUKE BEHNKE, son of Turner Sports Senior VP and Exec Producer JEFF BEHNKE, won the Semi-Pro Division season championship by one point in the track's Thursday Night Thunder Series (THE DAILY)....SI’s PETER KING has put his condo in Boston’s South End on the market for $1.35M.
