Chubby Chandler's Recent Success Could Put ISM In Same Category As IMG

Golfers from Chubby Chandler's International Sports Management have won the last three major championships, and ISM has "become a management company rivaling and perhaps surpassing" IMG, according to Craig Dolch of GOLF WORLD. Chandler represents the winners of the aforementioned tournaments -- Darren Clarke, Rory McIlroy and Charl Schwartzel -- as well as '10 British Open winner Louis Oosthuizen, and "every major seems like a Chandler victory tour." ISM has "become so powerful in the last 12 months that Chandler, 58, no longer places wagers on his players, something he was famous for in the early days of his agency." He said, "It's an amazing ride we're on right now." Dolch writes Chandler has become "so powerful and famous that his players playfully call him 'our superstar agent.'" British newspapers refer to the "larger-than-life Englishman as a combination of Jerry Maguire ... and Don King." Clarke said of Chandler, "It has to be said: He's not shy of a camera or microphone." Clarke, Chandler's first client when he signed with him in '90, said, "He doesn't pussyfoot around the way some so-called agents do. In America his style hasn't gone down well at times because certain players don't play in certain tournaments, but there's a reason for that. Besides, he doesn't make our decisions." McIlroy said at ISM, "everyone knows everyone." He added, "It feels like a big family. I'm sure IMG does a good job with its players, but it just felt more homey with Chubby." Dolch notes ISM has "expanded into the management of star cricket players (including former England captains Michael Vaughn and Andrew Flintoff) and golf tournaments," and Chandler "hopes to someday represent American golfers" (GOLF WORLD, 8/8 issue).
