Jim Nantz to receive Pete Rozelle
Radio-Television Award
The Pro Football HOF yesterday announced CBS' JIM NANTZ as the ’11 winner of the Pete Rozelle Radio-Television Award. Nantz, who will be the youngest recipient of the award, will receive the award on Aug. 5 during the Enshrinees Dinner in Canton, Ohio. Nantz in ’02 was presented the Naismith Memorial Basketball HOF Curt Gowdy Media Award., and he joins DICK ENBERG and CURT GOWDY as the only broadcasters to be recognized by both the football and basketball HOFs (CBS). Nantz that day also will be fulfilling broadcasting duties for CBS’s coverage of the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational. Nantz said, “It’s going to require some multitasking, which typifies what my broadcasting career has been like” (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 7/7).

DIVORCE COURT: In Charlotte, Gary Wright reports NASCAR Chair & CEO BRIAN FRANCE “is again trying to keep secret new details about his contentious divorce -- this time in federal court, where he has accused his former wife of tape recording telephone conversations to extort money from him.” France has “asked a federal judge to seal documents surrounding those telephone conversations.” France claims that in the calls, he and his wife “discussed details about property distribution, the custody of their two children and what’s best described in one court document as ‘sensitive personal and financial matters’” (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 7/7).

CRIMINAL COURT: Toronto-based DR. ANTHONY GALEA yesterday pled guilty to “bringing unapproved drugs,” including HGH, to the U.S. Galea clients have included golfer TIGER WOODS and Yankees 3B ALEX RODRIGUEZ, and Galea's guilty plea “eliminates the need for a trial -- along with the likelihood that evidence and witness statements could publicly reveal who he visited or billed.” Galea agreed to “cooperate with investigators and disclose the identities of his patients and their treatments” (TORONTO STAR, 7/7).

COMMUNITY SERVICE: Heat F LEBRON JAMES’ annual kids bikeathon in Akron “will be renamed Wheels for Education and will focus on 360 children entering third grade in Akron Public Schools.” The program will begin with a two-week camp, after which students “will receive an HP laptop, a Nike backpack filled with school supplies and a bicycle.” James said that he “began moving the Bikeathon in this direction after the success of State Farm’s 26 Seconds campaign” (AKRON BEACON JOURNAL, 7/6).

INJUNCTIVE RELIEF: U.S. District Court Judge KENT DAWSON yesterday ordered Las Vegas-based American Memorabilia to “halt an auction of a World Series ring and a commemorative watch that are the subject of an ownership dispute” between Baseball HOFer REGGIE JACKSON and his family. Dawson “issued a temporary restraining order” against American Memorabilia, Jackson’s stepmother and “members of her family who have been trying to sell” the merchandise (LAS VEGAS SUN, 7/7)….Charges against ESPN NHL analyst MATTHEW BARNABY, “stemming from a domestic incident with his estranged wife, will be dismissed in one year if he complies with a judge’s conditions.” Barnaby was ordered to “perform 500 hours of community service and to continue anger management counseling” (BUFFALO NEWS, 7/7).

NAMES: Free agent WR TERRELL OWENS is set to star in a sitcom based on his life called “8 & 1” whenever he retires. Owens is “shopping around” the TV show (CINCINNATI.com, 7/6)….The ’11 MET-Rx World’s Strongest Man will be hosted by Wingate Univ. in September. It will be the first time the competition will be held on a college campus. A total of six hours of programming will be produced from the event (THE DAILY)….NASCAR driver GREG BIFFLE and wife NICOLE welcomed their first child, EMMA ELIZABETH, yesterday (THATSRACIN.com, 7/6)….CBS’ LESLEY VISSER will marry businessman ROBERT KANUTH in Massachusetts on July 23 (BOSTON GLOBE, 7/7).
