Barclays Reportedly Extends Sponsorship Deal With PGA Tour Through '16

Barclays has "extended its current sponsorship deal with the PGA Tour to run" through '16, according to a source cited by Larry Dorman of the N.Y. TIMES. Barclays title sponsors the first tournament in the FedExCup playoffs (N.Y. TIMES, 6/29). On Long Island, Roy & Herrmann report New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo's administration and the PGA Tour "have reached an agreement to bring The Barclays tournament to Bethpage Black in 2012 and 2016." For The Barclays, the "plan is to rotate it among courses in the metropolitan area." It was "first held at Westchester Country Club, as an outgrowth of the traditional Westchester Classic, but the Tour and club couldn't reach agreement on continuing it." The Barclays the past two years has been held at Liberty National and Ridgewood Country Club, both in New Jersey, and this year will be at Plainfield Country Club in Edison, N.J. Roy & Herrmann note Bethpage "has been one of the tour's targets for a number of years, but state officials resisted because of the Black Course's commitments" to the '02 and '09 U.S. Open. The USGA "has no plans to return to Bethpage this decade, which opened the possibility of a tour event" (NEWSDAY, 6/29). The Barclays move to Bethpage in '12 will be the "first time that the event heads back to New York" since '07 (NJ.com, 6/28).
