ESPN Plans Extensive Production Of Women's World Cup Beginning Sunday

ESPN will "move its production sites all over Germany" for coverage of the Women's World Cup, kicking off Sunday, according to John Maffei of the NORTH COUNTY TIMES. All 32 games will air either on ESPN or ESPN2. The network will "start in Olympiastadion in Berlin, the site of the opening match as well as the historic 1936 Olympics and 1974 and 2006 World Cup matches." ESPN Senior VP & Exec Producer Jed Drake said, "If you had told me 14 months ago we would be producing the event to this extent, I'd have been surprised." In addition to coverage from Berlin, ESPN will air "shows from Dresden -- overlooking the historic Church of Our Lady, which was heavily damaged in World War II and the Dresden Opera House -- the Marktplatz in Heidelberg, the Phaeno Science Center in Wolfsburg and outside the stadium in Frankfurt." Drake: "Logistically, I don't like to use the word 'nightmare.' But we've made it far more interesting and challenging by taking the show on the road. Germany is a fascinating country, and we'll pay attention to the nuances of the country. We've put a lot of effort into this, and I think it will be a spectacular production." Maffei notes with games at nine different sites around the country, ESPN "will use three broadcast teams to call matches." In addition, former U.S. F Mia Hamm "will do interviews for espnw.com" (NORTH COUNTY TIMES, 6/24). Drake said, "Off the success we had in 2010 with the men’s event, we recognized the opportunity to raise the level of our production to one that is, in essence, on par with that of the men’s tournament." ESPN's studio shows will be hosted by Bob Ley and ESPN U.K.'s Rebecca Lowe, "with former U.S. players Brandi Chastain and Briana Scurry, former U.S. coach Tony DiCicco and internationals Alicia Ferguson (Australia), Monica Gonzalez (Mexico) and Viola Oderbrecht (Germany)." Ian Darke and Julie Foudy "will be the lead play by play team, backed up by Adrian Healey and Kate Markgraf and Beth Mowins and Cat Whitehill" (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 6/24).

SCALING IT BACK: The GLOBE & MAIL's Bruce Dowbiggin reports because of the "tournament’s smaller scope compared to the South African World Cup last year, CBC will need only one, not two, production crews" for coverage in Canada. Scott Russell will host, "joined in studio by former Canadian women’s national team member Clare Rustad and Jason de Vos." The CBC's Brenda Irving, Sportsnet's Louis Jean and the Globe & Mail's Stephen Brunt will "supply onsite colour" from Germany (GLOBE & MAIL, 6/24).
