New Nike Swift Hockey Jerseys, Socks Too Tight For Players

Swift Response: Players Say
New Nike Jerseys Too Tight
Team Canada Exec Dir Wayne Gretzky ordered his players to “go back to the regular sweaters” after they tried out Nike’s new Swift line of jerseys and socks during a scrimmage Thursday, according to Al Strachan of the TORONTO SUN. The jerseys are prototypes of the ones Team Canada will wear at the ’06 Games, and Blue Jackets LW Rick Nash said, “I couldn’t get it on. It was way too tight.” Oilers D Chris Pronger added, “They need to make some tailoring adjustments. ... The socks were a little tight, too. My feet are still a little numb.” Bauer Nike Hockey Communications Manager Steve Jones noted that the jerseys and socks were “just a first attempt.” Jones: “The key is that we don’t want to make it so over the top that they’re not comfortable wearing it. The feedback is obviously [that] we need to make some adjustments and we’re going to do that” (TORONTO SUN, 8/19). Coyotes LW Shane Doan described the jerseys as “European. A cross between a soccer uniform and a hockey uniform. They’re so tight. It’s something you might wear in a bar. But in a hockey rink?” (NATIONAL POST, 8/19).
