Staying Put: ESPN To Keep Media Account At Wieden & Kennedy

ESPN is keeping its $45M media account at Wieden & Kennedy, N.Y., according to sources of ADWEEK. Wieden & Kennedy, which has handled ESPN’s media and creative since ’98, beat out Havas’ Media Planning Group, Omnicom’s OMD, Starcom and The Media Kitchen (ADWEEK, 3/7 issue).

ESPN Utilizing Company Assets For
Latest “Without Sports” Campaign

WIRELESS: Sources indicated that ESPN “seeks an agency to craft a national multimedia campaign for its new wireless sports service.” One source estimated the budget at $30M, and it is unclear if Wieden & Kennedy, Portland, is participating (ADWEEK, 3/7 issue).

GOING TO THE BALL: ESPN’s “Without Sports” campaign has returned for a third year, and the first spot, which debuted yesterday, features a scene from “Cinderella” to celebrate the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship. In the ad, Cinderella’s glass slipper is a basketball shoe, the stagecoach becomes a basketball and the castle is a basketball dome. The tag: “Without Sports, Cinderella wouldn’t wear sneakers.” The spot, via Wieden & Kennedy, N.Y., marks the first time Disney has permitted any reanimation of “Cinderella” (ESPN).
