Fox Earns 41.1 Fast National Nielsen For Super Bowl

Jacksonville Residents Tune Into
Super Bowl In Record Numbers

Fox earned a 41.1/62 fast national Nielsen rating for its coverage of Patriots-Eagles Super Bowl XXXIX, down 1% from a 41.4/63 for last year’s Patriots-Panthers Super Bowl XXXVIII on CBS. The 133.7 million total viewers for this year’s game ranks as the fifth-best figure in TV history. However, the game averaged 86.1 million viewers, the lowest Super Bowl average since Ravens-Giants in ’01, and down 4% from 89.8 million for last year’s game, which was 25 minutes longer. The game’s first 21 minutes (6:39-7:00pm ET) averaged a 38.1/62, the best initial tune-in for the Super Bowl in five years. The rating peaked with a 43.0/62 from 10:00-10:20. The 4 ½-hour pregame show averaged a 10.1/21, peaking with a 34.9/58 for the last half-hour before kickoff. The halftime show earned a 40.1, down 4% from the 41.6 for the previous half-hour (THE DAILY). In DC, Lisa de Moraes notes Patriots-Eagles was the “least watched of the Patriots’ three Super Bowl wins in the past four years” (WASHINGTON POST, 2/8). Following the game, “The Simpsons” averaged 23.1 million viewers and posted an 11.2 rating among adults 18-49 from 10:45-11:16. “American Dad,” which aired from 11:16-11:46 averaged 15.1 million viewers ad earned a 7.5 in the demo (HOLLYWOOD REPORTER, 2/8).

JACKSONVILLE: In Jacksonville, Jeff Elliott notes the game earned a 58.9/77 on Jacksonville’s WAWS-Fox, ranking as the top local market in the country and marking the highest rating ever for a Super Bowl host city that did not have a team playing in the game. It was the third-highest rating ever recorded in a metered market for a Super Bowl, trailing only a 63.0 in Chicago for Bears-Patriots Super Bowl XX and a 59.6 in Milwaukee for Packers-Patriots Super Bowl XXXI. The 43.3% increase over Fox’ national average is also the best ever by a Super Bowl host city (FL TIMES-UNION, 2/8).

PHILLY: In Philadelphia, Gail Shister notes the 56.0/77 on Philadelphia’s WTXF-Fox was lower than the 56.6/73 for the Eagles’ NFC Championship game win over the Falcons on January 23. But Shister notes “tons of Philly-area viewers” were in Jacksonville for the Super Bowl, while the NFC Championship game took place during a snow storm (PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 2/8).

NORTH OF THE BORDER: Patriots-Eagles drew 3.1 million viewers on Canada’s Global TV, down from 3.56 million last year and 4.2 million in ’03. By comparison, the Argonauts-Lions Grey Cup in November drew 4.012 million viewers on the CBC (TORONTO STAR, 2/8).

REWIND: In N.Y., Kate Arthur cites TiVo data as showing that the most rewound play of the game was Patriots LB Tedy Bruschi’s interception, though the most replayed moment of the broadcast was when a phone number was shown for viewers to call to vote for the game’s MVP (N.Y. TIMES, 2/8).
