GRINNING AND BARING IT ALL: AUSSIE SOCCER TEAM CAUSES STIR

The print run for the "controversial" nude calendar of
the Australian women's national soccer team has increased by
900% "in the wake of huge media coverage," according to
Michael Cockerill of the SYDNEY MORNING HERALD. Australian
Women's Soccer Association CEO Warren Fisher: "The original
plan was for a low-risk run of 5,000 copies, but we've gone
up to 45,000 and it hasn't even been launched yet." Based
on a commission of A$1 per issue, the players "could net up
to" A$6,000 each, which is "more than most will receive in
individual grants" leading up to the 2000 Summer Games. All
12 team members appearing in the calendar will attend the
launch today, and "have been briefed" about possible
questions. Fisher said that each player "remains comfortable
with her decision" to pose: "The reason this calendar is
generating such amazing interest is that each of the 12
players are expressing themselves individually, there is
nothing contrived about it at all" (MORNING HERALD, 11/30).
