          STEFFI GRAF bid pro tennis "a final, emotional
     farewell" last night at the Chase Championships in N.Y
     (BOSTON GLOBE, 11/17).  A crowd of 12,647 watched as Graf,
     surrounded by her playing colleagues, was presented gifts
     from tennis officials.  At one point, a fan yelled, "Where's
     Andre?"  Graf responded, "He's home watching on TV and he's
     checking you out.  You don't want to mess with him" (N.Y.
     POST, 11/17)....The NORTHEASTERN CENTER FOR THE STUDY OF
     SPORT IN SOCIETY held its 15th annual awards banquet last
     night in Boston.  Among the honorees: LAURIE FLUTIE for her
     work as co-Founder of the DOUG FLUTIE JR. FOUNDATION FOR
     AUTISM; ROBERT AND MYRA KRAFT for instituting an anti-
     violence awareness program for Patriots players;
     Northeastern Univ. P GREG MONTALBANO for successfully
     battling testicular cancer.  Olympic Gold Medalist RAFER
     JOHNSON was enshrined in the center's Hall of Fame (BOSTON
     GLOBE, 11/17)....Two shareholder lawsuits brought against
     Qwest Communications Founder PHILIP ANSCHUTZ (See THE DAILY,
     8/16) have been withdrawn.  The suits accused Anschutz of
     violating securities laws against insider trading (ROCKY
     MOUNTAIN NEWS, 11/17)....On the "Tonight Show," NBC's JAY
     LENO showed footage he filmed over the weekend at the
     Homestead Motor Speedway in FL where he asked NASCAR
     officials questions regarding FL driving regulations.  DALE
     EARNHARDT, when asked if he could pass a driver's test in
     FL: "Probably not. Can't read Spanish" (NBC, 11/16)....The
     efforts of Braves P TOM GLAVINE to establish a financial
     trust for his children is examined in a front-page report in
     the WALL STREET JOURNAL.  Glavine is providing a "family
     incentive trust" that gives his children more money if they
     "act in ways he approves" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 11/17).
