SALT LAKE TORNADO CAUSES DELTA CENTER TO CLOSE FOR WEEKS

The 19,911-seat Delta Center, which lost parts of its roof yesterday when a tornado touched down in Salt Lake City, will "be closed for at least six weeks for repairs," according to Joe Baird of the SALT LAKE TRIBUNE. Jazz GM Tim Howells: "It took a major hit. But nobody got hurt. We got very lucky." While the tornado tore "away strips of roof panels, giving the ceiling a venetian blind effect," the arena "remained intact." However, the Starzz will move their final two home games to Weber St. Univ.'s Dee Events Center in Ogden, and other events, such as Jazz F Karl Malone's August 20 benefit concert, will "have to be moved or rescheduled" (S.L. TRIBUNE, 8/12). Jazz Dir of Media Relations Evan Silverman: "It would be premature to say when we'll have another event at the Delta Center" (AP, 8/12).
