Two-time U.S. Open winner Payne Stewart may become
"more marketable" with his second win at the event Sunday
and "his trademark knickers and related golf attire,"
according to George Lazarus of the CHICAGO TRIBUNE. Burns
Sports President Bob Williams said that Stewart "sticks out
with his personality and style." Lazarus writes, "Worth
watching will be what renewed interest there might be on
Madison Avenue in Stewart" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 6/22).
HE'S SO FINE: CNN/SI's Nick Charles profiled Yankees SS
Derek Jeter and said, "Jeter's spotless image and boyish
good looks make him instantly approachable to the public and
irresistible to Madison Avenue. Throw in All-Star ability
and it's no wonder he's now a client of the sports world's
best pitchman (Michael Jordan)." People magazine Assistant
Managing Editor Liz Sporkin: "He's got a twinkle in his
eye. He's got something that's magnetic about him."
Yankees C Jorge Posada: "Derek's becoming the Michael Jordan
of New York" ("Sports Tonight," CNN/SI, 6/21).
AS BIG AS FRAZIER? During his interview with Knicks G
Latrell Sprewell which aired last night, NBC's Peter Vecsey
said, "Do have any idea how big you could be in New York?
... Do you understand that you could be every bit as big as
Walt Frazier?" Sprewell: "That hasn't really hit me yet.
... If it happens, obviously that would be the greatest
thing that I could ever ask for" ("NBA on NBC," 6/21).
IMS INKS MAYWEATHER: IL-based IMS has inked a deal with
WBC Super Featherweight Champion Floyd Mayweather, giving it
exclusive marketing and endorsement rights for the fighter.
IMS President Mark Leonard: "Floyd has all the ingredients
necessary to become a world class endorser" (IMS). IMS will
"take between" 10-20% of any new endorsements for the
fighter. The SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL's John Lombardo writes
that Mayweather is currently "nearing the end of a four-
fight deal with HBO and has one endorsement deal with EA
Sports" (SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL, 6/21 issue).
