DEAR BOY, HAVE A CIGAR! ESPN TO SHOW BOTH ORIOLES/CUBA GAMES

The Orioles will host the Cuban All-Star Team on May 3
at Camden Yards, according to Joe Strauss of the Baltimore
SUN. The game follows the March 28 exhibition in Havana and
was "crucial" to Orioles Owner Peter Angelos "recouping
expenses from the team's sojourn to Cuba." The May 3 date
allows the team a "greater opportunity to market the game."
Game negotiations included which equipment would be used, as
the Cubans "consented to use wooden bats rather than
traditional aluminum." ESPN will televise both games, but is
"awaiting State Department approval of financial
arrangements" (Baltimore SUN, 3/14). May 3 had been an off-
day for the Orioles during a 12-game homestand. At least
"five chartered planes will make the trip to Cuba, carrying
players, coaches, team officials, baseball officials,
security personnel and some 300 journalists." The Orioles
are also "trying to arrange" to take 150 inner-city Little
Leaguers from the DC-Baltimore area (WASHINGTON POST, 3/15).
