ABC TURNS THE PAGE ON INDY 500 ANNOUNCING TEAM

Paul Page, the lead announcer for ABC Sports' coverage
of the Indy 500 since '88, is "stepping down," according to
Bill Koenig of the INDIANAPOLIS STAR-NEWS, who writes that
the move is a "joint decision" between Page and ABC Sports.
The network had "shifted" Page to broadcasting CART events
on ABC and ESPN, and there will be three CART races
broadcast in May, including one the day before the Indy 500.
Page: "Physically, it would have killed me." Koenig writes
that Page was "at times, caught in the middle during the
split between CART and the Speedway's Indy Racing League,"
and in '96, "fans of each" series "criticized him" when he
broadcast for both. ABC's Al Michaels will be the host of
the Indy 500 telecast, while Bob Jenkins will handle the
     play-by-play duties (INDIANAPOLIS STAR-NEWS, 3/11).
