NFL GRANTS GROUP WEB SITE LICENSING RIGHTS: OTHERS EXPAND

The Venator Group has "won a contract" to provide the
NFL's official Internet and catalog merchandise, according
to Lauren Coleman-Lochner of the Bergen RECORD. For
Venator, who's shares have "fallen precipitously in the past
year," the deal is the "retail equivalent of a Super Bowl
berth." Under terms of the deal, Venator, which operates
5,900 stores worldwide, including Foot Locker, Lady Foot
Locker and Champs Sports chains, will design and operate the
league's Web site and catalog (Bergen RECORD, 2/13). The
SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL's Andy Bernstein writes SI had
handled NFL business, but it "is getting out of the retail
business, leaving Venator and ProTeam.com (formerly Genesis
Direct) vying for the NFL business." Even with no NFL deal,
Proteam.com will "continue to issue" its "From the
Sidelines" football catalog and the official catalogs for
the NBA, NHL and MLB (SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL, 2/15 issue).
