DILLER KEEPS EYE ON CHICAGO STORY; IS LYCOS DEAL IN TROUBLE?

Barry Diller has "talked" to the White Sox about
bringing games to his WEHS-TV starting in 2000, according to
Kirk & Sherman of the CHICAGO TRIBUNE. Sources says that
Diller "wants to become a major player on the sports
broadcast scene in Chicago," and part of his plan "could
involve" bidding to bring a package of Bulls, Cubs and White
Sox games from WGN to WEHS. Kirk & Sherman report that
Diller's "timing couldn't be better" since the White Sox's
and Bulls' deals with WGN and Fox Sports Chicago expire at
the end of their seasons (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 2/12).
REBOOT LYCOS DEAL? In N.Y., Paul Tharp writes that
David Wetherell, CEO of MD-based CMGI, the largest
stockholder in Lycos, is "trying to bully" Diller into
"sweetening his bid" for Lycos. Wetherell, who sits on the
Lycos board and whose company owns 20% of Lycos stock, had
initially "backed the deal" between Lycos and USA Networks,
but changed his mind when "investor revolt" sent Lycos stock
plunging (Paul Tharp, N.Y. POST, 2/12).
