DON'T MESS WITH A DALEY: MAYOR TELLS BEARS TO GET ON BALL

Chicago Mayor Richard Daley said Wednesday "that he's
shopping Soldier Field" to MLS and "anybody else who's
interested" because the Bears have yet to renew a lease that
expires after next season, according to Fran Spielman of the
CHICAGO SUN-TIMES. Daley: "It's not a threat. ... There are
other interested parties that would like some time in
November (2000) for soccer. If that date is not taken, it
can be used." Daley denied that MLS was being used to
"light a fire" under Bears President Michael McCaskey, but
he did criticize the team for "failing to re-up at Soldier
Field even after pulling the plug on plans to build a new
stadium in Elk Grove Village." Daley: "If they're not
interested in playing (at Soldier Field), maybe they're
going to go to Lake Forest and play up there where their
(new) training facility is. ... Eventually, we're going to
make some decisions." Bears officials were not available to
comment on the Mayor's remarks (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 1/21).
