WE REGRET TO INFORM YOU THAT YOUR SEASON HAS BEEN DELAYED

The NBA will open training camps Thursday instead of
today and the league has "drawn up three extra schedules to
have ready" in case the season starts later than February 5,
according to Lacy Banks of the CHICAGO SUN-TIMES. NBA
Deputy Commissioner Russ Granik: "As of (Tuesday), the
season is still expected to start Feb. 5, but if the opening
of training camp is pushed into next week, that might
change." NBA Senior VP/Communications Brian McIntyre said
Thursday "is the earliest" date training camps could open
(CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 1/20). In Boston, Peter May writes that
teams received a league memo saying training camps "will not
open until tomorrow at the earliest" (BOSTON GLOBE, 1/20).
YOU'RE NOT CHOKING! In N.Y., Frank Isola reports news
of a Knicks deal for Latrell Sprewell once the CBA is signed
left the team "preparing for the onslaught of criticism that
is sure to accompany the acquisition" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS,
1/20). In NY, Ian O'Connor writes under the header,
"Checketts Abandoned Principle To Acquire Sprewell." He
writes that the MSG President "has a lot of explaining to
do" after he "promised" players like Dennis Rodman and Nick
Van Exel "would never wear the home team's jersey."
Checketts was also a proponent of moral clauses for players
during the recent CBA negotiations. O'Connor: "Checketts --
a devout Mormon, a strong family man -- is done as a moral
compass in sports" (WESTCHESTER JOURNAL NEWS, 1/20). In NJ,
Adrian Wojnarowski writes under the header, "Sprewell Deal:
A Total Sellout At The Garden." Wojnarowski: "Where's the
vision gone at the Garden? Where's its conscience?"
(RECORD, 1/20). A N.Y. POST editorial states that it's "too
bad" that "good box office and bad role models go hand in
hand" (N.Y. POST, 1/20). But Mark Kriegel of the DAILY NEWS
writes that the addition of Sprewell "incites fresh debates
and new story lines" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 1/20).
WHAT'S 'POWER PLAY' KEITH? In Chicago, Lacy Banks
writes that Bulls free agent Dennis Rodman told "Fox Sports
News"' Chris Myers that he is "not going to play this year,"
but added, "I'm not going to say I'm retired." Rodman, in a
statement on AOL, "I've been thinking for a while now about
doing more with my acting career, and I may get involved
with sports management and representation." Banks also
reports that Rodman and his agent, Dwight Manley, "are
parting ways" (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 1/20). "Fox Sports News"'
Keith Olbermann wondered who convinced Rodman to go back
into movies: "Obviously not people who saw him in the movie
'Power Play,' in which he made Jean-Claude Van Damme look
like Laurence Olivier" ("Fox Sports News," FSN, 1/19).
