WALSH ON BOARD, WASHINGTON MUST WAIT FOR FAST EDDIE APPROVAL

Bill Walsh "formally will return" to the 49ers today to
"begin the process of rebuilding the front office and the
player roster," according to sources of Ira Miller of the
S.F. CHRONICLE. Walsh has signed a three-year contract to
become the team's new GM. NFL Dir of Football Development
Gene Washington is "waiting only" for 49ers co-Owner Eddie
DeBartolo's official reinstatement as team owner to join the
organization as Exec VP and will deal with league matters
and stadium issues. NFL execs say DeBartolo's case will be
"taken up at a meeting of club owners next month and could
be resolved in March." But he "is known to be quietly
active with the team already" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 1/20). 49ers
co-Owner Denise DeBartolo York was "ticked" with a San Jose
Mercury News report that she "was behind" the delay in
hiring Washington. A source said, "She has nothing to do
with stopping anything" (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 1/20).
