BROWN SAYS 49ERS STADIUM COULD HAPPEN....MAYBE, ITS POSSIBLE

          S.F. Mayor Willie Brown "retreated yesterday from his
     long-held optimism that his pet project, the proposed 49ers
     stadium, will ever be built," according to Edward Epstein of
     the S.F. CHRONICLE.  Instead, Brown described the project --
     which is estimated to hit $500M -- as a "distinct
     possibility." In '97, the stadium/mall complex was estimated
     to cost $525M, now the stadium alone "could cost" $500M. 
     Brown: "I would have to be an utter fool not to recognize
     that danger sign and react to it."  Brown will meet with NFL
     Commissioner Paul Tagliabue and 49ers Interim President
     Larry Thrailkill on September 18 (S.F. CHRONICLE, 9/10).
