FRANCHISE NOTES

While the WNBA Shock offered money back guarantees to
fans who did not have a "great time" at last weekend's games
versus the Starzz and the Rockers, a team spokesperson told
THE DAILY that no patrons took the team up on its offer.
The Shock had been averaging 9,007 fans heading into the
weekend, and drew 8,180 for Friday's Starzz game and 8,573
for Saturday's Rockers game (THE DAILY).
OTHER NOTES: Negotiations on a Metrodome lease
extension between the Twins and the Metropolitan Sports
Facilities Commission resume this morning, but the sides
"disagree over the length of the lease and how long Twins
owner Carl Pohlad will agree to concentrate on finding a
local buyer for the team" (STAR TRIBUNE, 7/22)....In N.Y.,
sources tell Richard Johnson of the N.Y. POST's "Page Six"
that Reggie Jackson "is quitting his job as a scout" for the
Yankees due to disagreements with ownership (N.Y. POST,
7/22)....The impact of Mark McGwire's pursuit of MLB's
single-season home run record is examined by Richard
Sandomir in today's N.Y. TIMES. The Giants are expecting to
draw an additional 15,000 to their two-game series against
the Cardinals starting tonight (7/22). McGwire, on his
self-imposed news blackout: "I'm getting tired of seeing my
mug on TV and in the paper. Sometimes you just don't want
to know. ... The newspaper -- I just pick it up and throw it
in the trash" (Mark Maske, WASHINGTON POST, 7/22).
