NAMES IN THE NEWS

          Jazz F KARL MALONE, who has repped himself "for years,"
     said he signed with agent DWIGHT MANLEY recently because "the
     people that have agents seem to be the people who get the
     (big) contracts."  Manley said that he has "big plans" for
     Malone: "The goal is for Karl to win some rings and to become
     the No. 1 product endorser in America.  Once MICHAEL JORDAN
     retires, he's going to be the guy to carry the basketball
     load" (DESERET NEWS, 7/14)....People magazine's Mitchell Fink
     reported on CNN's "Showbiz Today" that actor MICHAEL DOUGLAS
     has been "cruising the Mediterranean off the coast of the
     island of Sardinia in a yacht with" Heat President & coach
     PAT RILEY ("Showbiz Today," 7/15)....SI's "Scorecard"
     profiles DC-based attorney LON BABBY, who offers his clients
     "pay-by-the-hour representation."  While Babby is "leading
     the revolution, other lawyers are also embracing the billable
     hours strategy" (SI, 7/20 issue)....Panthers Owner JERRY
     RICHARDSON will be the keynote speaker at a July 30 Los
     Angeles Sports & Entertainment Commission conference which
     will examine "whether there is a demand" for pro football in
     the area "and what needs to be done about it" (L.A DAILY
     NEWS, 7/12).....SE RI PAK is profiled in the CHRISTIAN
     SCIENCE MONITOR, as Michael Baker writes, "With South Korea's
     economy in shambles, there couldn't be a better time for a
     hero" (C.S. MONITOR, 7/16).  LPGA Commissioner JIM RITTS:
     "It's been unbelievable.  The number of phone calls I've
     gotten recently, the messages I've received in my voice mail,
     the people I see in airports -- all they want to talk about
     is Se Ri Pak" (FL TIMES UNION, 7/16)....The MLB Rangers will
     dedicate the lake adjacent to The Ballpark in Arlington in
     memory of broadcaster MARK HOLTZ, who died in September
     (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 7/16)....Packers DE REGGIE WHITE
     appeared in a full-page ad in yesterday's USA Today with his
     wife, SARA, under the header "In Defense Of Free Speech." 
     The $63,000 ad was paid for by a coalition of 15 Christian
     groups, including the Christian Coalition and American Family
     Association.  White, in the ad: "I've been called homophobic. 
     I've been called stupid.  I've been called unintelligent ...
     by so-called gay activists" (AP/JOURNAL SENTINEL, 7/16).
