AZ-based Action Performance Companies, Inc. has
obtained exclusive rights to market, sell and distribute
NASCAR-licensed products through NASCAR's Web site,
www.nascar.com. Other proposed business initiatives include
creating the NASCAR Pit Crew club, the official fan club of
NASCAR; developing a motorsports consumer database for use
in direct marketing campaigns; and extending Action's NASCAR
license agreement to 2013, including option periods. The
business initiatives and extension of Action's current
NASCAR license are subject to the execution of definitive
agreements (Action Performance Companies).
COLLECTIBLES CRAZE: In S.F., Lewis & Chapin reported
that Target discount stores are conducting a "controversial
test," by punching holes in the bubble-and-cardboard
packaging of diecast race-car replicas issued to commemorate
NASCAR's 50th anniversary. Target spokesperson Carolyn
Brookter said that the experimental program was started "to
try to discourage overzealous collectors from emptying
shelves of the collectible toys, particularly Racing
Champions and Hot Wheels." Brookter: "The bottom line is
that we are trying to make the merchandise accessible to
everyone." The NASCAR collectibles "are worth more if
they're still in their boxes, in pristine condition." Some
NASCAR collectibles that sold for less than $10 in retail
are bringing in $30 and up on the secondary market. Lewis &
Chapin also reported that some collectors "have been paying
children finder's fees to locate" the toys, and kids have
been "lining up before stores open, to get first crack at
fully-stocked shelves" (S.F. EXAMINER, 6/13).
